Is Pilley’s Island Cursed?

I’m not superstitious and I don’t believe in curses but I can’t help but wonder about this place sometimes. It seems that every time I turn around, something tragic has happened. There has been so many deaths, accidents and illness since I moved here 8 years ago. I’m lousy with dates and not likely to have the order right but these are incidents that have rocked my world since landing in Pilley’s Island. I may even miss names but the following stand out in my mind even though I may not have known them personally or well. Trevor Whalen was loved by the whole town, I didn’t know him (saddly) but cancer beat the young man down and won. Then Mikey Whalen (uncle?) succumbed to cancer. A good man, loved by all. Otto Rice also got cancer and died, (fighting it every step of the way). Sure, they all fought it valiantly. A horrible, horrible fire took the lives of Bernetta and Melvine (spelling?) and even one of the family pets. It happened at Christmas and Christmas will never be the same for so many people. A young man in the prime of his life had a tragic accident and left his young wife a widow and his son fatherless. A senseless accident was all it was. Donna Whalen, developed one the most rarest forms of leukemia and died the most dignified death I’ve ever heard of. Just months before his 103rd birthday, Charles Weir slipped away in his sleep. Not a tragic death but it rocked the town as well. And now there’s Keith. A young man who did nothing but work hard and do favors for anybody that asked. These are just people that I knew or knew of and if you ask me, the list is too long!

My heart goes out to all these families. Their loss is the loss of the whole town. I don’t want to think, ‘who’s next’ but sometimes I just can’t help myself.

Pilley’s Island IS NOT CURSED! The cycle of life just gets me down.

I apologize for any misspelled names and any other information that may not be accurate. The information in this blog comes from my memory which often has more holes then my kitchen strainer.
